Friends on the Other Side animation analysis

This song from the Disney movie The Princess and The Frog is probably one of my favourite examples of fluid and quick animation. The character of Dr. Facilier is tall and lanky which makes him especially good for molding in certain shapes. He is essentially made of loose lines that can be pulled in different directions. So when he is pulled in one direction the rest of his body follows. He never stands rigid but is usually slouched which is characteristic of his evil nature.

He has a surprising range of motion, able to stretch and hunch over and do all sorts of motions that normal human bodies couldn’t. Generally his body follows his feet, which gives him a very smooth movement, especially when dancing. While sitting down we see the dexterity of his hands as he handles the tarot cards, which again showcase long sweeping movements. Similar to how he moves while standing, he often hunches over and explodes outward in a large range of motion. His movement is what makes a something as boring as someone sitting at a table, lively and full of emotion.  His body movement is what accentuates his emotions and demeanor and it’s what makes him such a smooth, evil character and one of my favourite villains.
